Galveston Senior Portraits More Than a Beach Session

When you think about senior portraits in Galveston, the first thing that probably comes to mind is the beach. And yes, the beach is pretty incredible.

But one of the reasons I love photographing seniors in Galveston has very little to do with the beach.

It’s the fact that you don’t have to choose.

You can have the historic architecture of downtown Galveston, colorful walls and unexpected little corners, beautiful gardens, water views, and beach portraits all in the same session. That variety is what makes Galveston such a great place for a senior session that feels like you.

It starts with the senior, not the location

When I start planning a senior session, I don't begin by picking a location and trying to fit the senior into it.

I start with her.

What does she love? What does she wear? Is she drawn to color or something more classic? Does she want a polished look, something casual, or a little of both? Does she have a dog she wants to include? A favorite book? A sport? A car? Something meaningful that tells part of her story?

Those details give us a starting point.

From there, we can build a session around her instead of simply choosing a pretty place and taking pictures there.

One island. So many different looks.

This is probably my favorite thing about photographing in Galveston.

We can start somewhere completely different from where we finish.

Maybe we begin in the historic district with beautiful architecture, old staircases, interesting textures, and the character that makes Galveston feel like Galveston.

Then we might find a colorful wall or an unexpected little spot that gives the next set of portraits an entirely different feel. We can change outfits, change the mood, change the surroundings, and keep moving. And then, when we're ready, we can head toward the water.

By the time we're finished, the gallery doesn't feel like 40 pictures taken in the same place. It feels like a collection of different moments from one really great day.

Sometimes the best locations aren't the obvious ones

I love scouting.

I'm always noticing buildings, colors, textures, doors, walls, staircases, gardens, interesting light, and those little places you might drive past without giving them a second thought.

Galveston is constantly changing, which makes this even more fun.

A location that caught my eye a year ago may look completely different now. Something new may have appeared that would be perfect for a particular senior. That's why I don't want every senior session to look the same.

The location should make sense for the person we're photographing.

Bring the things that make the session yours

Some of my favorite senior portraits happen when we bring something personal into the session.

Maybe it's your dog.

Maybe it's a Bible or a book that has meant a lot to you.

Maybe you're a tennis player and want to bring your racket. Maybe you love your car. Maybe you're heading off to college and want to incorporate something that represents where you're going next.

Those details may seem small, but they're the things that turn a pretty picture into a picture that actually means something.

Your senior portraits don't have to be a collection of poses in pretty locations. They can tell a little bit of your story.

And then there's the beach

Eventually, we'll probably end up with our feet in the sand.

I love saving the beach for later in the session because by then we've already created so much variety.

The dress you've been waiting to wear. Bare feet. Wind in your hair. The sound of the water. A little movement. A little less posing.

It feels like the perfect way to finish.

And because Galveston gives us so many options before we ever get to the beach, the beach portraits become one part of your story rather than the entire story.

More than a location

That's really what I love about senior portraits in Galveston. It's not just a beach session. It's the freedom to create something with layers.

A little history. A little color. A little architecture. Maybe something unexpected. Something personal. And eventually, the coast.

We don't have to choose one look. We don't have to choose one location.

And we definitely don't have to make your senior portraits look like everyone else's. We can start with you and build from there.
