How to Find Unique Outfits for Senior Portraits: A Photographer’s Guide.

The right outfit can elevate your photos from ordinary to extraordinary, showing off your personality and making you feel confident in front of the camera. As a photographer, I’ve seen firsthand how the perfect wardrobe choices can transform a photoshoot. If you’re looking for something beyond the basic jeans-and-tee combo, I’ve got you covered. Let’s dive into some creative ways to find unique outfits that will make your senior portraits truly stand out. While classic styles always work, adding a personal and creative touch to your wardrobe can make your session truly stand out. Here’s my expert advice to help guide you through the process of finding distinctive outfits that reflect your personality and style.

1. Explore Vintage and Thrift Stores

Thrift stores and vintage boutiques are goldmines for one-of-a-kind clothing pieces. Look for retro dresses, worn-in denim, leather jackets, or statement accessories that you won’t find in mainstream stores. These pieces can add a timeless, effortlessly cool look to your portraits, making them stand out from the typical senior photos.

2. Check Your Family’s Closet for Vintage or Heirloom

Some of the best fashion finds are already in your home. Ask your parents or grandparents if they have any unique clothing items from past decades—think 90s band tees, boho blouses, or classic blazers. Incorporating a meaningful family piece not only adds a unique flair but also makes your photos more sentimental and personal.

3. Mix High and Low Fashion

Pairing trendy, affordable pieces with high-end or designer accessories can create a stylish and unique look. A simple dress from a budget store can instantly be elevated with a vintage scarf, a cool hat, or statement jewelry. As a photographer, I always encourage seniors to think about textures and layers, as they add depth and interest to photos.

4. Support Small and Local Designers

Instead of shopping at big-name stores, check out local boutiques, handmade fashion brands, or even Etsy. You’ll find unique, handcrafted pieces that will make your senior portraits feel extra special. I’ve partnered with a local boutique that allows my clients to borrow clothing for their portrait sessions—completely free of charge! This is a fantastic way to access stylish, high-quality outfits that will make your photos even more special. If you’re interested, just let me know, and we’ll find the perfect pieces for your session.

5. DIY and Custom Pieces

For a truly unique look, customize your own clothes! Try adding patches to denim, embroidering your initials on a jacket, or even tie-dyeing a shirt in your favorite colors. DIY fashion ensures your outfit is one-of-a-kind and personal, which can create a signature style for your session.

6. Look Beyond the Typical Stores

Instead of hitting the usual mall stores, try looking in unexpected places like online secondhand shops, or even costume shops. Some of the best outfits come from the most unexpected places! I often suggest seniors bring a mix of styles so we can experiment and capture a variety of looks.

7. Layer and Play with Textures

Unique outfits aren’t just about the clothing itself but also how you layer and mix textures. Play with lace, velvet, denim, or leather to create dimension in your look. Layering different pieces, like a dress over a turtleneck or a long coat over a jumpsuit, adds extra visual interest to your portraits.

8. Incorporate Your Hobbies and Interests

Your senior photos should reflect who you are! If you love music, consider a band tee or leather pants. If you’re into vintage aesthetics, opt for a retro dress or jeans. As a photographer, I encourage seniors to bring a mix of personal items that truly represent their personality, whether it’s a favorite hat, a meaningful necklace, or a pair of standout shoes.

9. Rent Instead of Buying

If you want a statement piece but don’t want to splurge, renting an outfit could be a great option. Websites like Rent the Runway or local dress rental services allow you to wear stunning outfits without the commitment of buying them. This is a great option if you want a high-end look for a fraction of the price.

10. Be Confident in Your Choices

The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and confident in whatever you wear. Unique outfits stand out when they reflect your personality, and confidence is the best thing you can bring to your senior session! I always tell my clients that the best photos come from being yourself and wearing outfits that make you feel amazing.

By thinking outside the box and incorporating pieces that are personal, stylish, and unexpected, you can create a senior portrait look that is completely your own. As your photographer, I’m here to guide you every step of the way—so don’t be afraid to get creative and have fun with it!
