The Ultimate Senior Portrait Planning Guide: What Every Grad Needs to Know
Senior year is full of unforgettable moments — pep rallies, college decisions, last-first days, and all the little in-betweens. One of the most exciting milestones? Your senior portraits. But if you're not sure where to start, you're not alone. This ultimate guide will walk you through everything you need to know to plan an elevated, stress-free senior portrait experience you'll love — and your future self will thank you for.
1. Book Early — Like, Really Early
If you're aiming for a premium senior experience (think: personalized locations, professional styling, and heirloom-quality products), you'll want to book months in advance. The most sought-after photographers typically open spots early and fill quickly — sometimes 6 to 8 months before the session even happens.
2. Think About the Vibe You Want
Your senior session should reflect YOU — not a cookie-cutter version of everyone else. Before booking, ask yourself:
-
Do I want something outdoorsy or editorial?
-
Should it feel natural, moody, vibrant, classic?
-
Do I want multiple outfits, locations, or professional hair & makeup?
Creating a Pinterest board or saving IG posts can help communicate your vision.
3. Choose a Photographer Who Gets Your Style
Every photographer brings their own creative direction, editing style, and level of service. Exclusive senior photographers often offer:
-
Pre-session wardrobe consults
-
Location scouting
-
Professional styling & glam
-
Guided posing
-
Custom artwork or heirloom albums
You deserve more than just digital files — you deserve a guided, elevated experience that tells your story beautifully.
4. Plan Your Outfits Like You’re Curating a Magazine Spread
You don’t need to stress over designer brands — but you do need to dress intentionally. Exclusive photographers typically help with wardrobe planning (or even have a client closet!). When selecting outfits:
-
Choose a mix of dressy and casual looks
-
Layer textures and accessories
-
Avoid loud logos or neon colors
-
Prioritize good fit and confidence over trends
5. Location, Location, Location
Where you shoot changes the entire tone of your session. Want an ethereal, golden-hour field? A chic urban vibe? A dreamy garden or modern architecture?
Many photographers offer exclusive or private locations you won’t find on a basic Google search. (I have a list of these hidden locations I love to use.)
6. Don’t Skip the Details (Hair, Nails, Brows, etc.)
Small details show up in big ways in high-resolution portraits. Before your session:
-
Plan out your hair cut and color with just the right amount of time before
-
Touch up nails (or go neutral)
-
Keep brows tidy
-
Drink plenty of water for glowing skin
Bonus: Take advantage of professional hair & makeup offered by your photographer, so you can feel pampered and photo-ready.
7. The Reveal: More Than Just Pictures
A luxury senior portrait experience often ends with a reveal session — where you’ll see your images for the first time, choose favorites, and decide how to display them in your home. From handcrafted albums to custom wall art, it’s more than a gallery — it’s a celebration of your story.
